This summer, the courses North/South and River Run at the School of Photography have focused on subjects paralleling the theme of Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art. Students have studied how art can relate to social politics and explored the city of Göteborg and its relationship to the Göta älv river. Alongside the courses, students have pursued their own artistic and theoretic work.
During week 41 some of the students will present their work at Röda Sten Art Centre:
– Students from North/South invites you to a workshop in Dialogue Table
– From the cours River Run the students Eva Höglund, Mattias Josefsson and Lotta Larsson will prensent their work.
DIALOGUE TABLE
THURSDAY 13 OCTOBER 6.30 PM, RÖDA STEN ART CENTRE
We are questioning ”the old order” of Heaven. Could we let ourself go into the unknown? Could we accept that not everything can be translated or regulated? We are against destruction. We who are different – the new Swedes – we are coming to say: Hello! Can you hear us? We are speaking from the school benches (Svenska För Invandrare), the garden lots (Komettorgets Odlingslotter) and the bazar (Kviberg Marknad) of Gothenburg! The Gothenburg Art Biennale is a local public institution. Thus, can it become a laboratory that creates space for action and debate? A true action which is not a project that you accomplish, but an open process in which you engaged yourself. What could be the biennale´s responsability towards these three situations and experiences? Can we as citizens of Gothenburg make use of this context? Contrasting the works of art to the political realities in this town we would like to re-examine these issues through the use of a Dialogue Table* – an open space for discussion. We want to create possibilities for new processes, ideas and understandings. Pure creativity draws on something is already there; it moves from one space to another and the creative act is that movement. Under PANDEMONIUM, we present three realities caused by ”accident”, and we will use them in the dialogue to produce new knowledge and create possibilities together with you.

Can we accept the destruction of a place with a very well defined identity and function in the cityscape and in its citizens’ life, and the replacement of it with an artificially staged and minimized version as THE ONLY possible solution? fThe Photo Studio project has the intention of creating an archive/collection of portraits that can be seen as a tool in understanding the complex relationship between the photographer and her clients. I believe that the negotiation / dialogue taking place between me, the photographer and my clients helps me to better understand what the act of representation could and should be about. Taking upon the role of the studio photographer, I am trying to better understand and revaluate my position behind the camera. My intention is neutrality, but I’m aware of the fact that I cannot escape being the subject of my investigation because I cannot escape my subjective ideology; therefore I am trying to understand the codes from which I interpret the world and by doing so, to understand who I am, and to assume the responsibility for my gaze.

While European Union has announced the failure of multiculturalism under the context of global migration, recent political events such as the Swedish Democrat entered the Parliament have called into question the nature and progress of integration.
